The decision today of the Obama Administration and Attorney General Holder to try Khalid Shaikh Mohammad and four other men accused in the September 11 attacks in New York is a serious mistake and establishes a very dangerous precedent. These trials should have been tried in a military court as was originally planned.
We will undoubtedly come to regret this decision. At the end of the process, when multi-millions of dollars are spent on scores of taxpayer funded trial lawyers who will tie this case up in knots and make a mockery of our judicial system, we will wish that these cases had been tried in military courts where they belong. How fitting it is that this announcement was made on Friday the 13th.

While the lack of benefits from the Stimulus Bill is easy to see, the costs it will impose are not. The $787 billion addition to our national debt will make it increasingly difficult to service that debt and force our government to make some very unpleasant choices. Our debt burden is rapidly approaching levels which in the past we have chastised developing countries for. The US government will eventually be forced to a) raise taxes dramatically; b) make vast and indiscriminate cuts in all government services; and/or c) print money, destroying the value of the U.S. dollar and unleashing the type of inflation we experienced in the 1970’s. And for those who believe that we have seen the worst of declines in real estate markets, just imagine the effect of 15-20% mortgage rates – something we have not seen since the 1970s and the Carter Administration.

The results of election night 2009 are a cause for great celebration for both the Republican Party and more importantly the cause of limited government conservatism. At the same time, the night’s most significant blemish, the loss of Doug Hoffman in the 23rd congressional district of New York, demonstrates an important fact. Primaries matter.

Please, let’s have a true discussion of the issues instead of the current pantomime we are playing where we go around and lecture the same people over and over again as to why we are the best qualified to help shape the future of our country; it is not for us to say. Let’s take this election and our country’s future seriously; let us show respect for the intelligence of the voters, and finally let us show some respect for the process and the purpose of an election.

In the 2006 elections, Carol Shea Porter made a major point of repeatedly criticizing Jeb Bradley on all manner of issues, demonstrating, she said, that he should not be a member of Congress. But oddly enough, as soon as she was elected, she quickly adopted the same actions she accused Bradley of.
So, shouldn’t she now be measured against the same standards to which she has held others?

The argument being made in Washington is that by eliminating the profit from student loans they will be cheaper. They have recently made the same argument in the case of healthcare insurance. The most worrisome aspect of all of this is that it shows a fundamental lack of understanding of basic economics.
Profits are a return to the efficiencies of doing a good job. No one will pay extra just for the thrill of it; there needs to be a good reason for such charges before people will shell out their hard earned money. At the same time, profits are a signaling device to the rest of the market that encourages new players, ultimately bringing in competition, reducing costs and thus increasing innovation and improved service.

NH Political Report - James Pindell
Manchester attorney Brad Cook writes about First District Congressional candidate Bob Bestani in his column for the New Hampshire Business Review this week, only after recalling a few thoughts on Sen. Ted Kennedy.
“Those considering the Republican challenge to Carol Shea-Porter might compare Bestani’s résumé with that of Guinta, who has served for four years as mayor and has little, if any, experience in business or government administration apart from those four years.”

Despite the President’s claims, his health care plan will not control costs because it fails to address issues such as tort reform, illegal immigrants and misguided incentives. He also needlessly politicized the debate by questioning to motives of the representatives who have legitimate concerns with his plan. As a financial expert, it is clear to me that his plan will also significantly add to our budget deficit and leave the taxpayers footing a very expensive bill – one we cannot afford.
